Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and preventive care for pediatric patients within the scope of professional licensure, certification, clinical privileges, and organizational policies. This position collaborates with pediatric physicians, nurses, families, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to deliver safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Clinical Care
Conduct comprehensive pediatric health assessments, including medical and developmental histories, physical examinations, screenings, and review of relevant diagnostic information.
Diagnose and manage acute and chronic pediatric conditions and develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical findings, patient needs, and established standards of care.
Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging studies, and other diagnostic procedures necessary to evaluate patient conditions and treatment response.
Prescribe and administer medications, immunizations, and other treatments in accordance with applicable licensure, prescriptive authority, clinical privileges, and organizational policies.
Perform approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the Nurse Practitioners demonstrated competency and clinical privileges.
Monitor patient progress, evaluate treatment effectiveness, modify care plans as clinically indicated, and coordinate specialty consultation or a higher level of care when necessary.
Recognize and respond appropriately to urgent or emergent changes in a patients condition, including initiating resuscitative measures within the positions training and certification.
Patient, Family, and Program Support
Educate and counsel patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, nutrition, development, preventive care, health maintenance, and treatment recommendations.
Coordinate care and referrals with pediatricians, specialists, nursing staff, therapists, schools, community agencies, and other professionals involved in the patients care.
Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the electronic medical record in accordance with clinical, legal, regulatory, and organizational requirements.
Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, clinical education, quality improvement activities, continuing education, and assigned departmental or organizational committees.
Support the education of residents, students, and other healthcare professionals within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Core work hours generally consist of four weekday shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with every third weekend, rotating holiday, and on-call coverage as scheduled. Work hours may vary based on patientcare and operational needs.
TRAVEL
Minimal local travel to affiliated hospitals or other assigned clinical locations may be required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Masters or doctoral degree from an accredited pediatric nurse practitioner program required.
Current, unrestricted Michigan registered nurse license and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification required.
Current national board certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in primary care or acute care, as appropriate to the assigned practice setting, required.
Current prescriptive authority and applicable federal and Michigan controlled substance registrations required or must be obtained within an established timeframe following hire.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required.
Minimum of two (2) years of pediatric nurse practitioner or related pediatric clinical experience preferred.
Experience in an academic medical center, teaching environment, or interdisciplinary pediatric practice preferred.
Experience with electronic medical records and applicable clinical technology preferred.
Must meet applicable hospital and organizational credentialing, privileging, and professional liability coverage requirements.
Strong pediatric assessment, clinical judgment, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
