POSITION DESCRIPTION

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Reports To: Medical Director

FLSA Status: Full-Time/Exempt

Salary: 170,000.00/DOE

Position Summary :

The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) is responsible for providing high-quality, culturally competent primary care services to infants, children, and adolescents at Tule River Indian Health Center, Inc. (TRIHCI). This role focuses on health promotion, disease prevention, and management of acute and chronic pediatric conditions, while ensuring alignment with Indian Health Service (IHS), AAAHC, and applicable federal and state standards. The PNP collaborates with medical and behavioral health staff to provide holistic care to Native American and underserved pediatric populations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Perform comprehensive pediatric health assessments, including physical exams, developmental screenings, and behavioral evaluations.
2. Diagnose and manage acute illnesses, injuries, and chronic pediatric conditions.
3. Prescribe medications, immunizations, and therapeutic interventions in accordance with scope of practice and clinical protocols.
4. Provide anticipatory guidance and health education to patients and families regarding nutrition, growth, safety, disease prevention, and development.
5. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, behavioral health clinicians, case managers, and community health staff to ensure coordinated care.
6. Document all clinical encounters accurately and in a timely manner within the electronic health record (EHR).
7. Monitor and ensure pediatric compliance with IHS immunization schedules and well-child visit standards.
8. Refer patients to appropriate specialists or services as needed and follow up on care plans.
9. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, chart reviews, and care coordination meetings.
10. Maintain compliance with AAAHC, IHS, HIPAA, and all other regulatory guidelines and clinic policies.

Education and/or Experience: 

1. Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program.
2. Certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) through a nationally recognized certifying body (e.g., PNCB or ANCC).
3. Active and unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license with furnishing number.
4. Current DEA registration with authority to prescribe Schedule II-V substances.
5. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
6. Minimum of  5  years of clinical experience in pediatric primary care preferred.
7. Experience working with Native American or underserved pediatric populations is highly desirable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

1. Possess a valid California Driver’s License.

1. Possess valid First Aid/CPR certification at the BCLS level or obtain within 3 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications and Contingencies:

1. Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing
2. Certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP)
3. Active California NP license with furnishing number
4. Current DEA registration
5. Pediatric care experience in tribal or underserved settings preferred

Physical Work Environment :   The description provided here is representative of those conditions in which the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner will be required to perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this position, the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is situated in a standard office environment within the health center as well as in a vehicle to travel through the community; there is little exposure to variations in the weather or other similar elements. The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner will primarily be stationed in the Medical area of the health center, in the community or on transport but will also move about the health center to meet with physicians, patients, and co-workers. Consequently, the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner must:

1. Possess the mobility to work in a standard office setting (i.e. walk, stand, or sit for extended periods of time).
2. Possess the ability to use standard office equipment to write, type, copy, fax, or perform other duties.
3. Possess the strength to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 35 lb. repeatedly and up to 50 lbs. intermittently.
4. Possess the ability to navigate stairs on a regular basis. 
5. Possess the visual acuity to read printed materials and a computer screen.
6. Demonstrate hearing and speech capabilities that allow him/her to communicate in person and over the telephone as required.

The clinical setting at TRIHCI is categorized by OSHA as a Blood-borne Pathogen Category I facility. Consequently, there exists the potential for exposure to blood, body fluid/tissue, and infectious wastes. There also exists the potential for exposure to chemicals, biologicals, toxicants, and irradiants found on-site.
